Level One

Course Details


Course attendees must be at least 14 years old & hold either coach or freelance coach membership with UK Gymnastics

Course Duration

1 Day - Practical followed by an assessment carried out during the day.

Do I need to bring participants

Please bring a gymnast with you if possible.

What resources are included

​1st4Sport logbook, discipline specific resource pack, and online resources. 


£175 (Must also hold UK Gymnastics Coach or Freelance Coach Membership) 

Should a futher assessment be required this may an incur additional charge


By the end of this course you will:

  • Begin to apply the 'How to Coach' skills

  • Understand how to use and build up progressions for discipline specific skills

  • Know your ethical coaching responsibilities

  • Know your safety responsibilities

  • Know how to move and set up equipment safely for your session

  • Recognise muscles and how they work

  • Describe the principles of group organisation and communication

  • Appreciate the principles of safe support

  • Know the structure and purpose of preparation for activity

  • Understand basic biomechanical principles

  • Appreciate the need for different learning styles

  • Developing key skills

  • Bridge

  • Straddle stand

  • V-sit

  • Straddle v-sit

  • ½ lever

  • Tucked Russian lever

  • Tucked top planche

  • Side splits

  • Single leg balances - Y balance and arabesque

  • Headstand tucked and stretched

  • Rolls

  • Forwards roll

  • Backwards roll

  • Roll to straddle stand

  • Piked rolls

  • Handstand

  • Handstand forwards roll

  • Cartwheel

  • Cartwheel ¼ turn in

  • Round off (in prep for the R/O flic)

  • Hurdle step

  • Handstand bridge to stand

  • Forwards and backwards walkovers

  • Jumps

  • Straight jump

  • Tuck jump

  • Star and straddle shaped jumps

  • Straight jump with ½ and 1/1 turn

  • Using the trampette and spring board for teaching jumps

  • Learning how to fall

Vault Skills

  • Run up

  • Take off hurdle step and jump from the board

  • Landing drills

  • Squat vault

  • Handspring to flatback

High Bar & Asynmetrical Bars

  • Introducing bars to beginners

  • Grasping the bar

  • Straight hang

  • Back hang

  • Learning to swing

  • Swing on high bar

  • Work in gloves and loops

  • Swing and ½ turn

  • Dismounting from the high bar

  • Upward circle

  • Cast to land on the floor

  • Cast to backwards hip circle

  • Cast towards handstand

Introduction to Dance

  • Pliés

  • Tendues

  • Arm positions for girls

  • Arm positions for boys

WAG Add-On

  • Walks

  • Adaptation of feet and hands on beam

  • Runs

  • Pivot turns

  • Changing levels

  • Jumps and leaps

  • Stretched, tucked and star jump

  • Split leap for beam and floor

  • On the beam: simple balances, splits, jumps

  • Conditioning on the beam
